Profile Information

Hometown:
Huntington Beach, California
First Name:
Karen
About Me:
In the 1983 & 1984 I worked at a horse ranch in PA and weighed only about 125 pounds of solid muscle. I was able to keep this weight off for 2 years after I moved back to CA in 1985 by two workouts a day at a health club. In 1987 I got pregnant and my babies father didn't speak to me during the pregnancy. I was devastated and that's when food stuffing started and just kept on going right up to 276 pounds by 1995!

In 2002 my sister and I were packing up my fathers things and that entire day my ears were ringing so loud I couldn't hear anything. When I got home that night I called 911 and was rushed to the hospital because my blood pressure was 176/110 (or something like that). In the hospital they discovered I had high blood pressure, obviously, and diabetes. And the battle began. High cholesterol too, pitting edema, and my childhood asthma was completely out of control and still is. I was able to keep my blood sugar under control for a few months and lost 25 pounds right away. But then the stuffing started again and I have not controlled my blood sugar or weight since. Finally have my blood pressure is controlled but I'm on two medications a day. In 2005 I started losing my business clients in CA so I sold my house and moved to AZ. Here I purchased a horse and I've been getting quite a bit of exercise but weight & blood sugar are still out of control. I did drop from 262 to 218 but have slowly jumped back up to 238 now. About a month ago the tops of my feet started hurting and I was so worried that it was nerve damage that I decided I have to do something about my weight. That night I got on the internet and started researching my options. Initially I had decided to get the lap band surgery until I saw Dr. Rutledge's site on MGB. Thank God! My husband and I both agree that this is the way for me to go. I was surprised to find that my doctor also agrees and is VERY supportive. My husband is not a bit concerned about me having the surgery even though his wife of 23 years prior to me passed away from complications that started with the old fashioned gastric bypass surgery where they cut you open back in the 80's or 90's prior to MGB. But she started eating greasy food and her gull bladder burst and during that surgery she contracted mersa infection which basically started destroying her insides. Over the next 6 years she just got worse and passed away in 2006. Fairy tales really do come true when you trust the Lord to make them... I met my husband in 1971 and over the years we both met and married other people. Then in 2007, a year after his wife passed away, my phone rang on my birthday and it was Robert. You see, I had been praying to the Lord that if He wanted a husband in my life He was going to have to bring me one because I was not looking. I started praying that 5 years prior and when my phone rang that day I knew, when I learned it was Robert, that it was the Lord saying "ok here's your perfect husband". Well that was in January of 2007, he came to Arizona in April, asked me to marry him on June 4th and we were married on June 8th at Golden Valley Baptist church. For the past year and a half we've been just fine and riding our horses together every chance we get. I feel I need to do this for him too because he just couldn't stand to have my die sooner than I need to because of my weight problems. So, here I am... now I'm praying to the Lord for another big moment in my life. I have prayers out there for financial freedom from the IRS once and for all takes place in January of 2009 so I can have my surgery and move forward in a healthy body after MGB. I'm 51 years old and just can't deal with feeling like I could die any day. So I'm asking you for all your prayers that this surgery can take place for me early next year and the IRS will finally settle with me and be gone. This has been a lot of stress, and as I'm sure a lot of you know... Stress eating is such a comfort. It doesn't really comfort us, but all they same we head to that fridge. Or should I say headed because a lot of you here on this message board have had the surgery and Thank God are no longer dealing with that urge. I'm so happy for you!!!

6 MONTHS POST OP

I was in the hospital having brain surgery for this anniversary update :) While I was there they also discovered, from the major pain I had in my back one night, that I actually fractured my spine at the L2 when my horse knocked me down, so now I'm in a body brace for 6 to 8 weeks. Oh.... and I'm selling my, too young, horse and getting an older slower horse in January. Although without my horse knocking me in the head with her head they would have NEVER discovered I had anything wrong with my b… Continue

5 MONTHS POST OP

I hit onederland a few months back and I believe I totally forgot to post it. Can't be sure because have posted I just can't remember. Anyway, surgery day was January 28th, 2008 and I weighed 232 and as of a week ago I was down to 188!!!! I'm so pleased I had this surgery that I cannot recommend it enough.

These past two months I did have to start taking my high blood pressure pills again but only a 1/2 a pill instead of two different pills per day. But the good news is... I'M OFF OF THEM AGAIN… Continue

Need some help

It's 4 months past surgery now and I'm so weak at times I can hardly move. I don't know if its from low potassium because of the lasix (water pill) I have to take daily or from low iron. Wish I had enough money to have blood tests to know for sure but I don't so I can't... so I'm just going to have to guess as to the cause. I started taking iron pills only to find out on line today that you must take them 4 hours before/after you take calcium because calcium depletes the iron. Ok... wish I would… Continue

Hi Karen I am sorry that you have pain, To had some pain and some big bruses but it all went a way. I dont know if its a bad thing to tell you but I found that a icecream cone from MacDonalds was at times the only thing I could eat that didnt hurt. I dont know why. it cooled my throat and my belly. All people are diferent. be carefull, but this helped me. Its is still the only reason I ever go to mac at all.
