My Beliefs and Actions Create My Reality

Profile Information

Hometown:
Near Eugene Oregon
First Name:
Lila
About Me:
Began the process of preparing my packet within a couple weeks of discovering MGB in May 2009. Been overweight since early childhood and obese since high school. Have never been able to keep off any weight loss. Both parents and most of their family members are also obese, especially the women. Have done a lot of counseling/personal growth work through the years, especially focused on the emotional aspects of using food. That knowledge and understanding has not changed my "will power". Until discovering MGB, I knew that weight loss surgery would not work in the long run from observing other family and friends experiences and complications of various procedures.

At 51, my 5'5" 315lb menopausal body is screaming at me that it can no longer continue to maintain the relatively high level of overall health I have fortunately had in spite of almost 40 years of significant obesity. Hypertension, diabetes and compromised mobility are loudly knocking at my door. Now is the time for surgical intervention and I thank God I found MGB. For the first time ever I have hope for lasting results and a long, healthy, active life.

I am unmarried and never had children. I have a close circle of long time friends who are my emotional family and support system. My biological family are a part of my life, but don't live physically near.

My God given gifts include attention and patience for detail work and figuring out the mechanical workings of things. I am very handy with tools and doing repairs or simple remodel projects around my home. In many ways, I am not like a "stereotypical woman", but I love being a woman and am most definitely attracted to men. I just haven't found one that I wanted to have in my daily life yet. I need a lot of alone time. I've always been that way.

My surgery was July 15, 2009 in Henderson NV with Dr. R and I weighed 316 the morning of surgery. Everything went very well for me. Dr. R came out from surgery and told my support person “it was a perfect MGB”. Surgery was 27 minutes and he bypassed 8’ of small intestine. I did wake up with nausea from my allergy to opioids, but the nausea cocktail that I had been previously told to ask for took care of it right away. I had NO PAIN and never used the available pain med pump. There was some discomfort in that I could tell my stomach had been seriously worked on and my throat was a little irritated from the bronchial tube used during surgery. Drinking the Gatorade and eating yogurt helped sooth it. I was out of bed to go pee and walking the halls every couple of hours through the evening and night. I couldn’t wait to get released from the hospital the next afternoon. I have had no significant issues and absolutely no regrets, ever. Once I made the decision to have the surgery, I’ve not looked back or second guessed my decision. I went into this with my eyes wide open and knew it was a tool, not a perfect miracle cure.

Some Frustrations and Unique to CLOS NV Experiences

This is a response to a blog reply requesting more specifics about my frustrations with CLOS information and the differences between NV and FL. I believe some of it is good information for pre-ops to be aware of who are, or are considering, going to Dr. R. My surgery was 7-15-09, a Wednesday, at 11 am. I was #3 of 5 surgeries that day for Dr. R.

My main frustration with information was trying to figure out if the website information was more updated than the manual, or the manual was more updat… Continue

5 Weeks Out Today

My surgery and recovery experience couldn’t have gone any better. Dr. R came out from my surgery and told my support person that I was a perfect MGB. It was 27 minutes and he bypassed 8’. I weighed 316 that morning. I had no pain and did not use the pain pump. I’m allergic to opioids and had nausea when I woke up, but the nausea cocktail I had been told to ask for worked like a charm. I could definitely feel that my stomach had been seriously worked on, but nothing I couldn’t tolerate. I think t… Continue

July 15, 2009 Tentative LV Birthdate

I just finished the draft of my patient letter that I will use to copy/paste into the on-line form. It has been very time consuming and like everyone says, so well worth it. I'm fairly articulate, but it doesn't flow out of me in a nice easy manner. It always took me twice as long as everyone else to finish my papers in my writing class. Anyway, ITS DONE!! It was the biggest hurdle and I feel such a sense of relief. All I have left to do is get my psych eval the end of this week and get 1 more c… Continue

Lila,
Sorry for the short message, but I hit the enter button instead of the shift key.
So Ill begin again.

Mike and I have spent many a day wondering how you were. We missed you and your dad on the last day. Im so glad you are doing so well. Your weight loss is very close to mine, keep up the great work, I plan too.
Aside from my 5k walk with my daughters I have also been paint the inside and ouside of my house. Its been a big work out, but it helps with the weight loss and toneing process.
Mike and I have been talking about going back to Vegas next year and have fun plus revisit Dr R and his clinic. How about you, you thinking about it?
It would be great to see you and your dad.
Keep me posted, Ill look forward to your comments.

lila thanks for checking up on me about my stomach aches, i did email dr. p, because i wanted to make sure i didnt have gastritis, he asked me some questions and i gave him info., he doesnt think i have it and told me to stop smoking and to eat something in the morning as i usually dont eat breakfast, i never was one to eat i n the morning, i have only had one stomach ache after his emails, usually if i take pepto i feel better shortly, i did notice that i had sometimes accidently forgot to take my prilosec before but now i am making sure i take it, for me the trouble is with the calcium pills, thier so friggin big its like swallowing a lemon or something.

it is funny how you can basically eat whatever and still lose weight, i hit a plateou this week but hopefully will resume losing soon, congrats on the 52 pounds in 3 months, looks like you are right on track with your weight loss which is awesome :)

Lila,
Oh thanks so much for the help.
Breaking it down is a good idea.
It feels less crazy that way.
Another MGB'er who went to Dr P said they dont make you redo the consent...she was just there 4 months ago.
I guess its not that weird that different hospitals require different things.

Lila,
I'm working on my packet during my lunch break and am unable to find what we are to take for pain and colds. Do you remember and if so, can you help me out with this?

Thanks Lila!
My journey has offically begun, although I am freaked out about getting this package done. I work full time and once I clock out I am on-call until I am back on....basically I clock in when I clock out. But that is how I am paying for this. So, while I can pay for it, I literally dont have time to complete all the stuff.
One day at a time, I'll just keep truckin. I have faith.
Thanks for the well wishes!
