About Me:
I am currently researching many different weight loss surgery options. I have zeroed in on the lap-band but came across Dr. Rutledge's site and am now reconsidering it. After watching all the videos on youtube.com about failed lap-banding I honestly feel like getting on a plane today to Vegas and learning all I can about the mini gastric bypass.

Other than that, I'm 24 and have been obese my entire life. A couple of years ago I joined a gym, got a trainer and lost about 20 lbs in a month. Honestly, it really scared me but I was so proud that I did it. Unfortunately, I also have thyroid disease as well as bi-polar disorder. The following summer I had a very bad manic episode in which I had to be hospitalized and treated with many different meds which packed on the pounds.
The 20 lbs success is gone and I have gained more since then.
I have followed Dr. Oz's "You On A Diet" for about a year and it's helped me so much.
I consider myself a different kind of obese in the sense that I'm not hungry all the time. I don't snack. I hate chips and chocolate. My main problem is that I forget to eat. I can go hours and hours without food until my body finally "screams" at me to feed it.
I hope that if I get this surgery, I will be able to use it along with my workouts to lose weight and keep it off for life. I'm young and I feel like I'm missing out already and I hate that feeling.
Also, I hope that if I lose this weight that maybe I will be able to start to see food as something good instead of something that I only eat when I need to. If I eat 6 small meals a day I can keep fueling the fire and hopefully get more energy.
Anyways, Ive said enough. I look forward to learning from this board and from everyone.

Much needed update... Part 1

Sooo. I don't know where exactly to begin but I know that this blog is completely overdue!

I wanted to thank everyone again for sending their love, prayers and support pre and post op. It means more than you will ever know.

So I suppose I will start at the beginning? Or where I left off?

As soon as I got approved I went on a crazy strict diet to lose some lbs before surgery. I lost about 14lbs and went from 412lbs to 398lbs (day of surgery.) It's crazy to write those numbers since I'm only in… Continue

I'm packing and shopping and packing and shopping some more. Trying to make sure I have all my stuff ready. My entire family is coming with me so trying to figure out who is bringing what as well as trying to figure out schedules has been crazy!!!

I havent had much time to… Continue

Where do I begin...

So much has gone on that i have no clue where to begin...

Um.. well, last Thursday I FedExed my packet to the Vegas office. I wanted to make sure it got there by Monday morning and it cost like 70 bucks but it will be well worth it. I really want to get it review, you know?

So since I am 387lbs (give or take 10lbs since who knows now) I have decided to start a liquid diet.
Thank God we had to contact people and join the message board because I was able to contact 3 other people who were my siz… Continue

wow...

I'm almost done with my packet.
It's very surreal. I know I've heard before that people have read so much info that they feel like they could do the surgery themselves and i totally agree at this point.
On that note, there are a lot of grammatical errors in the patient manual.
I know I'm nitpicking but I feel like rewriting the entire thing. There are some run-on sentences and unnecessary repetition. My mom joked that I should make a deal that I would edit the manual and they could take a few gr… Continue

I got my notebook after I did the patient information form online. They just automatically sent it to me at that point. Have you filled out that form yet?

Hi Morgan! I too looked into all the different kinds of surgery and even almost got the old-fashioned RnY, but luckily, I didn't. When I found Dr.Rutledge, like you, something clicked and I knew it was right for me. I'd love to be a contact for you. If you send me an email with "contact request" in the subject line to ParkeFamily@comcast.net then I will happily send you my letter. The 350 lb. limit is just a guidline. It's best to contact Dr.Rutledge directly by phone and discuss your case with him. If it turns out that you do need to lose 50 lbs, that is not an insurmountable number. The problem for us obese people isn't the losing of 20 or 30 or 50 lbs, it's the keeping off for the long run. You would only need to lose enough to qualify and the MGB would take care of the rest. It's important to be a certain weight, since fat builds up around our internal organs first (and we lose it from there first, too) so the less fat we have around our livers, the less risk there is for the surgeon when he has to manuver it out of the way to perform the surgery. And you won't be alone throughout the process, either. We will be rooting for you and giving you all the support we can. By the way, I live in New Hampshire, not far from Connecticut at all. :-)

Best wishes to you, Morgan!
Meg
