I paid for the MGB by taking money out of my IRA. There was no penalty for unreimbursed medical expenses (my insurance wouldn't pay for it).

It took me over a year to lose all my weight; at 1 year I was down 92 pounds. People didn't really start noticing until I'd lost about 50 pounds. All my clothes had elastic waists and big tops so they lasted a long time. I would go to second hand shops and buy clothes during the process. At 10 months out, I was down about 80 pounds and plurged at Chico's - spending about $2,000. Then I lost more weight and these were too big, too.....so wait before buying all new clothes.

I used to weigh everyday; I wish I still did! Also, each month I kept a weight and measurement chart so I could track how many inches I'd lost. At my thinest, my waist was 15 inches smaller, my neck was even 4 inches smaller! Hips were down 10 incles and thighs down 7 inches.

I looked at myself in every passing window/mirror because I couldn't believe it was me. One of my friends said I'd become vain because of it but she is a skinny person and always had been. I don't do that anymore of course, but it was a necessary part of the process to become used to the new me. But for the most part, my friends and family were very supportive and complimentary.

On eating, I'm single and live alone so I don't eat properly. I should load up on Lean Cuisine or the like but I don't. I eat what I want but my taste buds have changed. Fried stuff isn't appealing to me nor does it taste the same. I do drink during eating. I'm a big cracker eater - like peanut butter crackers or wheat thins.

When I eat out, I have enough leftovers for two more meals. But most restaurants give you too much anyway. I am a compulsive food buyer and ALWAYS have food on hand. I end up having people over to get rid of it. I have bowls of miniture candy out, but rarely eat any of it. It's like I give myself permission to eat it so it is not forbidden and I just don't want it anymore.

Don't give up! The idea of using my IRA money came to me out of the blue and I completed my packet in a month. Dr Rutledge approved me and I got the money out of my IRA. I live in Arkansas and had the surgery in North Carolina so I also paid for a sister to fly out there with me, the hotel, rental car, etc in addition to the surgery.

My surgery took 26 minutes. I spent one night in the hospital, took it easy the next day. Two days post op I went shopping with my sister, 3 days post op, I flew home. Four days post op I went bowling with friends and went back to work on day 5.

Hey Adrienne....wishful thinking on the loan at this point for me. Found out that I do not qualify at this point as the primary on the account, and I cannot find anyone else who will qualify either to be my cosignor. ARGG! Frustrated at this point because my husband I can so totally pay for the monthly payments, but cannot just dump out 17K in one shot. I'm seriously afraid if I don't do something soon, going back to work in Mid-August is going to kill me! I've got all the checks in the boxes ready, just no money. Go figure....I was trying to get a loan through surgeryloans.com Good luck! :)

:) You are welcome. Have a good 4th yourself. I'm off work now and ready for a bbq hamburger and a movie. LOL Yes food after the MGB is pretty normal. Tonight I will have a small 7% lean ground beef about 4oz with a piece of swiss cheese melted, a pickle and maybe even 15 chips or so. I might do a few cherry tomatos instead of chips tonight as I've got fresh tomatos from the farmers market.

typical day:
I start every morning with a blended with ice protien OJ yogurt drink with all my supp. and vitamins.

2 egg whites
one slice of toast

1/2 sandwich fills me with a side salad or maybe fruit or chips sometimes.

Southbeach PB protien bars are my favorite snack

I can eat a whole apple for a snack

4oz of hamburger or so. Some cottage cheese or salad. When I eat a can of soup i still only eat half with crackers. If I eat Subway i eat 1/2 of a foot long or get one of there wonderful salads.

Everyday is different. These are some ideas. I'd say now that I'm 2 years out, it's most days about 1/2 of what i used to eat. And sugar I have to be careful with as it has caused me to dump.

Helpful? :)

Welcome! I can pretty much eat anything i want, just smaller portions now. Yes I can eat seafood, steak, burgers but I love my salads and healthy food the most now. I just feel better when I eat what works for me. If I'm going over to someones house and there is a lot of different foods. I've taken my own foods or eat before hand or just indulge in a small portion of many foods if there is a lot of food going on. Veggies-Yes. Love them now. My tastes did change and so did my habits. I eat yogurt everyday, I just blend it with OJ and ice rather than eating it. Whatever works to get in that yogurt and vitamins. Have you found Rose Wolf on here yet? She is a patient of Dr. P. and very open to share her story. She is great! Keep reading, keep learning and talking. And keep in touch-i love sharing my fears that became my dream! :)
