Hello,

This is very exciting, and a little emotional knowing that I will have my life back soon (at least I hope). I am a Registered Nurse in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit. I have been obese most of my life (almost 38 years old) and I want to live again...learn how to surf, get my dive license, get my pilots license. I have such an adventurous spirit that it almost kills me knowing how my weight controls my life and ambitions currently. I am ready for this MGB journey and have read posts for countless hours, watched you tube testimonials all with the excitement knowing this may be me one day. Please, if you have the time to respond to my questions, and allow me add you to my contact list, I greatly appreciate it. I understand Dr. Rutledge is the greatest, however, I live on the East Coast (VA) and would probably rather go to Florida because my 8 year old daughter will be traveling with me and she could visit Disney World for the first time. My questions are as follows:

1. Which surgeon did you have?
2. How was your overall experience with this process?
3. How was your overall experience with the staff?
4. How soon did you get your date once the packet was submitted?
5. Was your primary care provider supportive with your decision? If not, did you have an difficulty with the referral?
6. Did you have much post-operative pain? If so, what relieved it?
7. Did you feel any of the hunger you experienced prior to surgery?
8. Did you feel a loss for food?
9. Did you experience depression? Did you have a history of depression prior to surgery?
10. How soon did you go back to work? Did your work require physical activity (pulling/pushing)?
11. Would you choose to have this procedure again? If not, why?
12. What suggestions or tips could you offer for those who will travel out of state?
13. Which hotels would you suggest?
14. Is there anything else you would like to add or comment on?

Sincerely,

Julie Bangs

I am so sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I am 3 months post op now so I take the vitamins and the occasional pepto and tums. To get my energy completely back up took about 2 months. The surgery itself wasn't that bad at all... I was taken to my room and was walking around 15 minutes later. The most annoying part was all the tubes and wires that had to be unplugged to get up to walk around and go to the bathroom. Make sure you get lots of meds in the hospital, i wasn't in pain, but they helped me sleep. My nurse actually refused to give them to me so I barely slept at all that night but in the morning Dr. R came by and gave me the meds so I could sleep. When I got home, I also had trouble sleeping the first night, but I put an estrogen patch on and slept for hours. Even if you think you don't need the patch, if you can't sleep, put it on - another girl my week couldn't sleep either and she truly believed that she didn't need the patch but at the 1 week post op meeting she said she had not slept a whole night since the surgery and it was clear she needed the patch. Everyone else was sleeping fine. The surgery throws off something in your body. I wasn't really moody right after the surgery but i needed the patch just so i could sleep. But later in the week, i needed the patch for my mood and i put an extra one on. I wore the patches for two weeks and then was fine - some people need them longer.
Also, i needed the anti-nausea prescription pills after the surgery. If you think you might need them, I would suggest picking them up before the surgery so you don't have to wait for the pharmacy when you are feeling sick. I took them like 4 times in the few days following surgery and then didn't need them. They say if you get nauseous easily prior to surgery then you will probably get nauseous after the surgery. so pick up anything you might need and have them on hand - including the estrogen patches.
My doctor wasn't sure about the MGB, but after my surgery he found out that i was only in the hospital for one night, i haven't thrown up even once, was horseback riding a week later, and can pretty much eat whatever i want even though I am eating cautiously. I heard that after my surgery (and after he read the whole packet), he was informing his other patients about the MGB cause he saw how easily I recovered and I am loosing weight - and not too fast, which was one of his concerns.
Write me with any other questions. Good luck making your choice.

Hi Christine! Dr. R told me I could ride the day after surgery... that didn't happen. I had my surgery on a Tuesday and I waited till the next Tuesday (day i got my staples out) before i took a trail ride. I felt it though. I lasted about 20 minutes cause I got really tired. I really wanted to ride earlier but i was afraid to with my staples in. And i was afraid to do anything but walk until about 2 weeks after surgery and i worked my way up to longer trail rides and more trotting and loping. This may sound weird, but i had this horrible thought that something could come detached inside, Dr. R assured me that it wouldn't but i was still unsure. When i fell off like 2.5 weeks after surgery, i suddenly was sure that nothing would come undone. My horse is 17 hands, so i was afraid to get off of him, cause your feet are so far from the ground. once again i thought that something could come undone (it wont), but i do recommend stairs and a helper to get on and off cause you'll feel the sugery and you'll feel your abs. They cut through your muscles for the surgery, so as soon as i started even trail riding, i was really sore. It took a few weeks for that to subside, but be expecting it. I know that this was a long answer to a simple question, but im really happy will me results at only 2.5 months out. seriously my riding has improved since surgery, my balance and my seat have improved and i look a whole lot better in my tank top and jeans. Best of luck with everything and make sure to keep me updated and ask me any other questions. -jenna
