About Me:
I am contemplating lap band surgery but have some reservations. I stumbled upon this website and am curious as to why the MGB is so much better than the band or the traditional bypass.

Hi Stacy, I'm sorry I'm just getting around to answering your post. By all means I am not telling you which decision to make or which procedure is best for you, but, these are the reasons I have chose MGB over every other type of weight loss. First of all, I have read story after story about how painful and unsuccessful the band is, not to mention the "upkeep" on it when you have to get it filled. The RNY has many problems associated with it, the first of which is it creates a tiny pouch of a stomach, which can then grow scar tissue and make it hard to swallow anything causing it to come back up, I've also heard of a high incidence of dumping, it takes longer to recover from, is not reversible or revisable, not as successful, a lot of people regain their weight and it costs quite a bit more (anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000...and I mean lets face it, since I have to fund it myself and I'm already having trouble getting $17,000, then getting more would be impossible for me).

The things I like about MGB are that it costs less, is both reversible (why you would want to I don't know) and revisable, its success rate is very high, I think something around 96% lose all their weight and don't regain it, it's minimally invasive, takes about 30 minutes and you're up and walking around that same night and on the road to a quick recovery, and since it leaves a larger stomach pouch, there is not much reporting of dumping or not being able to swallow or eat.

As with any weight loss surgery, there are going to be dietary and lifestyle changes, but, I think they are worth it.

Obviously, I have not had the surgery, but, I've definitley made up my mind to do it. However, I am looking into other options in Mexico as they are quite a bit cheaper and have lower restrictions on your BMI number (I'm not quite at 40, closer to 37). But, I don't understand why you have to wait until you reach that magic number of 40 when you're already experiencing life threatening conditions at a lower weight and have tried literally everything to lose the weight. My dad, who has diabetes, just got diagnosed with beginning stages of heart failure...I don't want to wait until I've got diabetes and I'm struggling just to keep my heart going. My biggest obstacle right now is finding the money to do it...but, I just keep praying, praying, praying for me and my brother to find it and exploring every financing option I can.

Well, that's my two bits, hope they help in some small way. Good luck on your journey. I will say this, if you can afford $17,000.00, have a BMI of 40 and have the patience to fill out the patient packet, then I would say definitely go to Dr. Rutledge for your procedure. I've heard nothing but awesome things about him. He pioneered the procedure, so he knows what he is doing.

Keep me posted on your decision and progress and I'll keep you in my prayers,
Audrey

Stacey, if you are having reservations, by all means delay your surgery. I thoroughly investigated all the options before deciding on the MGB, and as you can see from my photos, my results have been fabulous.

The most important thing to me was the success rate and the fact that the surgery is revisable and reversable. The lap band had way too many people having way too many problems - throwing up all the time, not losing enough, gaining it all back. The RNY was not revisable and was a longer surgery. Also people would lose weight then gain it all back.

And Dr R and Dr P are very open. You can watch their videos, read about them, see Dr R live in clinic online on Tues mornings. They answer emails and give you their cell phone numbers. And they answer!

In the end you have to decide for yourself. But if I had any doubts at all, as you seem to, I would never proceed with a surgery.

Have you watched Dr R's videos about former lap band patients? Quite scarey.

I just wrote you a page on the Lap Band and erased it. You have to make your decision for you. I have a lap band and it is being removed April 1st by Dr. Rutledge. Let's say I am so excited I can't wait and that goes for my family too. Husband and kids. They don't like what they have seen the last 3 1/2 years. I can tell you to please, please do research on this. All failures and those who suceed. Please talk to those who have bands and don't just read.
Email me @ vansanta@myway.com is you would like to talk further.

Hi Stacy...

I do have the lap band and I've had it for about 2 yrs now. At first I did lose weight where I was happy with the band but I also had problems getting the food down. Now I'm back to my beginning weight and I'm very upset because I feel that I have no restriction with the band I also sometimes forget it's even there. I don't want to discourage you from the band because I'm sure it has worked for others. I will be honest with you I could have been a lil more decipline but I was not that bad. Anyways the band didn't work for me but it could work for you. However now I'm looking into MGB and I'm really concidering doing it. Well stacey If u have any questions feel free to ask me ok. Ttyl bye
